Mexican-American baritone Schyler Vargas has established a distinguished career in opera, celebrated for a unique combination of exceptional vocal talent and compelling acting. He has earned acclaim for performances in diverse roles including Eisenstein in Die Fledermaus, Papageno in Die Zauberflöte, Count Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro, Mercutio in Roméo et Juliette, and Harlekin in Ariadne auf Naxos.
Schyler has graced the stage at Carnegie Hall twice, first as Strephon in Iolanthe and then as Connie/Ragged Man in Ricky Ian Gordon's The Grapes of Wrath. His career includes mainstage roles at prominent opera companies such as The Atlanta Opera, Lyric Opera of Kansas City, The Glimmerglass Festival, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, Arizona Opera, and internationally at the Château de Versailles in France, among others. On the concert stage he has performed the baritone solos in several master works including Orff’s Carmina Burana, Handel’s Messiah, and Vaughn Williams’ Five Mystical Songs.
In competition, Schyler is a two-time District Winner of The Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition and a three-time district winner of the Dorothy-Lincoln Smith Voice Competition. Additionally, he earned 1st place in the Tri-Cities Opera Competition, 2nd place and Audience Favorite in the Harold Haugh Light Opera Competition, and 2nd place in the Denver Lyric Opera Guild Competition.
Schyler is a sought-after talent for new opera and art song. He has collaborated with esteemed organizations including Houston Grand Opera, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, The Glimmerglass Festival, and Holy City Arts & Lyric Opera on new opera and song cycles. A career highlight includes premiering Shawn Okpebholo's dramatic song cycle, UNKNOWN, which commemorated the 100th anniversary of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington, VA, in 2021. This notable performance was featured on PBS NewsHour and NPR, among other publications.
An alumnus of prestigious training programs, Schyler has honed his craft as a Gerdine Young Artist at Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, Young Artist at The Glimmerglass Festival, Marion Roose-Pullin Artist with Arizona Opera, and a member of the Young Artist Vocal Academy with Houston Grand Opera. He holds a Master of Music degree from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.
